Oak Curriculum Partners

Oak curriculum principles

**Updated on 5th November 2024 to celebrate public launch of our Curriculum Overview available here.

Back in March 2024 we confirmed that we have been awarded the contract to create Curriculum PE resources on behalf of the Oak Academy. We are working in partnership with Complete PE and Youth Sport Trust but also ensuring input from our subject association afPE and most importantly that our network of physical educators informs what is created to ensure it has maximum value.

The resources will include planning for practical PE across Key Stages 1-4, in addition to GCSE PE content in the first instance.

We are excited to be working on this important project over the next 15 months or so as we support Oak’s mission of ensuring all schools have access to a high quality curriculum. For those of you not aware of Oak National Academy and their work, they were established at pace in lockdown as a response to covid-19 and the necessity for students to access learning from home. Over three years later and traffic to their website remains high which has resulted in a second phase of development to support teachers with high-quality sequences of learning and lesson materials that are fully editable and free to use. Read more here and Oak’s announcement is available here.

Initially we have been exploring and testing how to adapt the Oak model to best fit the needs of our practical subject and what to include in the initial wave of units of work to ensure they are fit for purpose for as many schools as possible and support the already great work going on in so many schools. We envisage these materials being of particular value to trainee and recently qualified teachers but also to build confidence in more experienced teachers introducing new activity areas/ units of work. We also envisage PE subject leads utilising the lesson materials when they need safe and easy to follow cover work. The beauty of these materials is that they will all be fully editable and easy for you to spin up your own alterations or changes to apply through different vehicles for learning (activity areas). Whilst we are limited on the number of units and lessons we will be writing, and that means some challenging choices around what to leave out in this initial wave of content creation, our ambition is to do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to planning and produce materials that make PE a more positive experience for all… including reducing the workload for teachers.

Our Curriculum Overview

We are really excited to share that our Oak PE Curriculum Overview is finely out there for all to see. It has consumed so much time, energy and collective thought since we first applied for this work back in November 2023. We are so proud of how far we have come with this curriculum. It will be familiar enough to all schools delivering physical education but is also a nudge towards a brighter future for our subject. It is national curriculum compliant but I believe goes beyond that to respond to the current needs, motivations and interests of pupils in school in 2024 and beyond. We encourage you to focus in on our four threads of Move, Think, Feel and Connect and consider how they weave through this curriculum that is progressive and purposeful right through from year 1 to year 11.

We are looking forward to starting to release the fully editable lesson materials throughout this academic year with a plan to get over 1,000 lessons (including GCSE PE slide decks, quizzes and worksheets) created, tested and filmed in real schools with real teachers and pupils by August 2025.

We believe schools and teachers will be able to lift individual units to integrate into their already successful physical education offer or pick up the entire editable curriculum to make a complete shift in their offer and save hundreds of hours of planning in the process.

We hope teachers will adapt and personalise both individual lessons and full units of work to best suit specific cohorts and contexts, but the scope and sequence we have mapped out feels like a pretty solid foundation!

Here are links to the interactive platform showing the unit sequence and curriculum ‘explainer’ as well as to download an editable word version of the whole document:

By teachers, for teachers

As part of this project we have recruited some of the very best teachers and content creators to join our existing team on a full or part-time basis between September 2024 and July 2025. We were blown away by both the quality and quantity of applicants. After a thorough shortlisting process, numerous tasks and four days of interviews we are excited to announce the following colleagues who, importantly, all have qualified teachers status and collectively have amassed over 200 years as educators will be joining us from September.

Curriculum Design Leads

Catherine Fitzpatrick from Complete PE is the trusted architect of the primary units whilst Will Swaithes will be designing and overseeing the production of secondary units to include GCSE PE. In addition to this Dr Liz Durden-Myers will have project oversight and ensure continuity of learning across all key stages but also that the very latest research informs our what, how and why of curriculum content. We will let you know as soon as the skeleton curriculum and sample units (likely to be year 1 and GCSE musculo-skeletal system) are ready to view via the Oak website but encourage you to keep your eye out ready for September.

  1. […] Oak Curriculum Partners – this commission has been a massive achievement for the whole team. This DfE funded piece of work that is being expertly led by Oak National Academy aims to put high-quality teaching materials and a well sequenced curriculum into the hands of anyone who wants it, for free. We will keep you posted but early feedback from the Subject Expert Group, Oak’s Curriculum Board and most importantly teachers and pupils in school who have been testing the prototype lessons has been really positive. Massive thanks to Catherine Fitzpatrick and the team at Complete PE, we could not do this without you! […]
