Government PE & School Sport Announcement

It’s a really exciting time for primary PE and Sport as a staggering £150 million-a-year funding boost is injected to primary school sport.

This funding is hoped to continue to inspire the Olympic and Paralympic stars of the future. The new sports funding aims to improve the quality of provision in every state primary school in England, by increasing the participation in PE and sport, developing healthy lifestyles and improving the performance levels that young people are capable of.

Where is this funding coming from?

• £80 Million from The Department for Education
• £60 Million from The Department of Health
• £10 Million from The Department for Culture, Media and Sport

What does this funding mean for Primary Schools?

An £8,000 lump sum will be given to each primary school, plus a £5 per-pupil top-up.

The funding is ring-fenced and can only be spent on physical education and school sport. The funding will go directly into the hands of heads and teachers who will decide what is best for their children’s needs.

Tougher assessment of sport and physical education provision via Ofsted to ensure the funding is bringing the maximum benefit for all pupils, with schools being held to account for how they spend the funding.

New provision as part of initial teacher training to produce a new generation of primary teachers with a particular specialism in PE.

Sustainability

This funding is only secured up until August 2015, and therefore sustainability is key in ensuring funding is maximised.

Ofsted criteria for schools will be amended to take into consideration how well schools are utilising the PE and sport funding to improve the quality and breadth of PE and Sport provision.
