Camogie is a traditional Irish sport played predominantly by women. It is similar to the game of hurling, which is played by men, and both sports are part of the Gaelic games family. Camogie is played with a stick called a hurley and a small ball called a sliotar. The objective of the game is to score points by striking the sliotar between the opponent’s goalposts, either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into the goal for three points. Camogie is a fast-paced and physically demanding sport that requires skill, agility, and teamwork.
This unit plan with a difference aims to provide teachers with suggested sequencing, content ideas and assessment themes to deliver Camogie safely and effectively in schools. The planning proforma is editable to adapt to suit your setting but is built around the idea of:
- Headline outcomes that can be articulated against our popular know, show and grow framework to recognise the holistic development potential of our subject.
- The simple language of beginner, improver, advanced and mastery to support progression.
- Core tasks that are great for engagement, development and assessment.
- An assessment rubric which helps self, peer and teacher assessment against key know, show and grow criteria.
